SAVE WOOTTON

Saving Wootton

Today, the Rockville Mayor and Council will present a formal statement once again urging the County Council to use its budget authority to fund major capital projects for Wootton High School and Twinbrook Elementary, so both schools can receive the support they deserve.

Before addressing that, I want to acknowledge the recent shooting at Wootton again. As I shared in a previous statement, this tragedy has shaken our community, and our hearts go out to everyone affected. In moments like this, the importance of a safe, supportive school environment becomes even clearer.

Wootton High School has long been a cornerstone of academic excellence in our community- walkable, central place where families and students come together. The Superintendent's recommendation to permanently close Wootton under Modified Option H would disrupt not only students and families, but also the stability and thoughtful planning that have shaped Rockville's growth.

Over the past several months, I've stood with the Wootton community: attending meetings, sharing resources, and encouraging more residents to get involved in this vital effort. I've seen firsthand how much Wootton means-not just as a school, but as a hub that strengthens our neighborhoods.

My colleagues and I have been clear: We oppose any plan to permanently close Wootton, and believe it deserves overdue investment to provide every student a safe, healthy learning environment. Thousands of families will be affected by this decision, and I remain committed to a transparent process, rooted in community input and educational evidence, as we work to protect our students' future.
